Harvest Time!

Last week I was out in my garden looking for interesting things to incorporate into my shop arrangements and it occurred to me that I hadn’t really explored my various succulents or other garden greenery beyond the obvious (rosettes wired on a floral stem or long pieces of Jasmine branches) so I grabbed my shears and got to harvesting the weird and the wonderful!

I was captivated by the strange alien shapes of the ivy blossoms and the soft-silvered leaves of my Lamb’s Ear. Many people don’t realize that if you leave Lamb’s Ear cuttings in water, they will root! It’s an awesome way to create long-lasting green- oriented arrangements.

I brought the armfuls of cuttings to the shop and experimented with different combinations and found that the succulents gave all my fall-themed bouquets a really nice edge. In addition to being extremely long-lasting and forgiving in any temperature, they are completely unexpected when mixed with roses, grasses or other garden harvested blooms.

Although I am not a big fan of greenery in bouquets, I consider succulents plants, and not your run-of-the-mill fern or leaf additions. It’s greenery that adds to the beauty and strangeness of the mix.

I love the way that trailing succulents flow out of my glass wall bubbles.

I’m also really excited about planting my succulent cuttings in elegant containers. The juxtaposition of romantic, fancy containers against the oddly shaped succulents always makes me smile.

Enjoy your days!
