Eternal Decemberist

An aside: 2011 was a year full of opportunities, changes and challenges on both personal and professional levels.  When I stop to think about it (and I often do),  I am overwhelmed with the amount of love our amazing friends and clients have shared with us these past twelve months. The shop exists only because people want it to. Whether or not I felt like having a shop, it couldn’t be real without the enthusiasm and support of the people that walk through our doors and find things that make their homes and lives more beautiful.

With that said, December is always a magical time at Apartment 46. We’ve got candles burning all over the store, the music is relaxing, the air is scented with warm vanilla, sparkly glass and vintage silver cover most surfaces, and our tiny creative endeavors  (such as the sand and pearl filled glass ornaments above) can be found everywhere you look. When the sun goes down it’s a cozy cocoon of a place. I’ll miss all the fairy-twinkle-beauty when we take it all down to make room for 2012.

In general, I love that Christmas seems to have gotten more eclectic design-wise. I have never really subscribed to red and green as color choices and nothing says “holiday” to me more than silver.  Tarnished or shined to perfection, silver gives everything a more elegant feel. Filling vintage silver bowls (like the Reed & Barton one above) with old glass ornaments, shells and various sparkling ephemera, makes for an interesting and imaginative display.

Personally, I was really inspired this year by Beach Chic – using loads of weathered seashells and vintage silver and glass, it’s my favorite Christmas style. I think of it as a mix of French country, shabby chic, ultra modern, rustic and eclectic all rolled into one. Since I’m not really thematic, and can’t really follow design rules all that well, it suits my aesthetic perfectly.

I honestly wish that I could keep our Christmas displays up (but ever-changing) all year! If I’m having a down day, all I have to do is unlock the door to the shop and be surrounded by all this holiday glitter and I’m hopeful once more. No matter what your holiday style is though, as long as you are filling your home with love, and things you love, you are going to create a lovely and memorable space.
