I don’t usually devote blog space to weddings or wedding-related wedding-ness but I am so excited to have come across some fabulous new stuff that I had to share it. When our store first opened, I had never done flowers for a wedding, let alone helped a bride plan for one. In fact, I didn’t even really plan for my own wedding so what did I know? Apparently, I knew something because the brides were finding me. They were capturing me with their cute and loved-up bridal hopes and dreams and what could I do? I had to create for them.

Since those first months, we’ve done quite a few weddings – flowers, planning, table decorating, counseling, shopping with and for the bride, and so much more. It’s been so much fun and I am very lucky indeed to have never had a bridezilla client. We’ve done several same-sex ceremonies as well and in those instances, I was doubly-blessed to get very cool people who trusted me to help make their day more magical.

The one thing that all my brides and grooms have had in common is their uncommonness. Each was unique and wanted something personal, edgy, organic, wild, fun, and expressive. I’ve designed dark and lovely flowers for punk rock clients, sculptural bouquets for artsy clients, wild and natural for those types of clients and my personal fave, succulents and peacock feathers for clients with one foot in the city and the other on a prince/princess dream cloud.

When I was catching up with the daily news today I saw a link to Offbeat Bride. I’m smitten. The gorgeous seashell bouquet was just one of many I thought were amazing and I was inspired by the sense of creativity throughout the site. I wouldn’t necessarily describe it as a DIY-centric kind of thing, although they do touch on that, but more like a starting point for those who know they don’t want a vanilla wedding but aren’t sure how to realize their visions without the whole thing seeming wacky. I sent the link on to one of my current clients who is artistic, dreamy, and romantic but definitely not cookie cutter!

I also saw the new Bhldn bridal line from Urban Outfitters (who knew?!) If I were getting married again, this dress, the pleated magic-filled confection above would be mine. I love it. I love how very much it reminds me of hand-creased paper without looking origami-esque. It’s modern and fresh and weird and lovely to me. Sigh.

Some of my favorite clients are those who are on their second wedding or who are old enough to know exactly who they are and what they want. Second-wedding clients have usually been through the pomp and circumstance and this time, the ceremony is about them and their love, not every relative their families could find on Ancestry.com. As I don’t consider myself a conservative florist, or even a florist for that matter (I love arranging and playing with flowers), any time someone chooses me to help express who they are and what their wedding is about, I’m over the moon. I’ll never be good at designing traditional flowers but that’s okay. I’ve realized that my kind of people will find me and when they do, we’re going to have one hell of a beautiful and creative time!

With love,

Melisa
